Heritage Roofing Restoration Complete at St Fillans RC Church, Houston

Roofing Advisors UK Ltd is pleased to announce the successful completion of Phase 1 roofing restoration works at St Fillans RC Church in Houston, Renfrewshire, one of Scotland's oldest and most historically significant church buildings.

With the HAKI scaffolding now struck and removed from site, the finished works are visible for the first time, and we are proud of the result our team has delivered on a building of this importance and character.

A Building of Historic Significance

St Fillans RC Church holds a special place in Scottish ecclesiastical and architectural history. As one of the oldest churches in Scotland, it carries with it centuries of community significance and a heritage that demands the highest standard of care from anyone entrusted to work on it.

Roofing and restoration works on a building of this age are never straightforward. The materials, the construction methods and the layers of history embedded in the structure all require a level of understanding and respect that goes beyond standard roofing practice. Every decision made on site - from material selection through to the sequencing of works, has to be made with the long-term preservation of the building in mind.

Phase 1: Church House Restoration Works

The first phase of works focused on the church house, delivering a comprehensive package of restoration roofing works across the building. Our team completed the following scope:

  • New roof slating - replacing the existing slate covering with new slates appropriate to the age and character of the building
  • Rainwater goods renewal - replacing deteriorated gutters, downpipes and associated fittings to restore the rainwater drainage system
  • Stonework repairs - addressing deterioration to the masonry to protect the structural integrity and appearance of the building
  • New felt for flat roof areas - installing new underlay to flat roof sections to restore weatherproofing performance
  • New leadwork - replacing and renewing lead flashings and details to ensure watertight junctions throughout
  • Chimney repairs - carrying out necessary repairs to chimney structures to prevent water ingress at one of the most vulnerable points on any traditional roof

Each element of this scope was delivered with care and precision, with our team conscious at every stage that they were working on a building that has stood for centuries and deserves to stand for centuries more.

Preserving Character While Enhancing Performance

One of the defining challenges of heritage roofing work is balancing the preservation of a building's historic character with the practical need to improve its long-term weatherproofing and performance. These are not competing objectives - done properly, they are entirely complementary.

The materials and methods used throughout Phase 1 were selected to be sympathetic to the existing fabric of the church house. New slating matches the character of the original roof covering. Leadwork has been installed to traditional detailing standards. Rainwater goods have been renewed in a style appropriate to the building's age and appearance. The result is a restored building that looks as it should and performs as it must.

For a community landmark of this significance, that outcome matters enormously. St Fillans RC Church is not simply a building - it is a place that holds meaning for the local community and for Scottish heritage more broadly. Maintaining it in good condition is about far more than bricks, mortar and roofing felt.

Delivered With HAKI Scaffolding Infrastructure

The scale and complexity of the works required a full HAKI scaffolding structure to be erected around the church house, providing safe and controlled access to all areas of the building throughout the programme. The removal of that scaffolding marks the formal completion of Phase 1, revealing the finished restoration works in full for the first time.

HAKI scaffolding systems are a trusted solution for heritage and complex building projects, providing the structural reliability and adaptability needed to work safely on older buildings with irregular or challenging roof profiles. Our team planned and worked within this infrastructure throughout, maintaining safe systems of work at every stage.

A Project We Are Proud to Have Been Part Of

Projects like St Fillans RC Church are a reminder of why heritage roofing work matters. The skills, the care and the commitment required to restore a building of this age and significance are considerable - and the results, when the scaffolding comes down and the finished work is revealed, make every element of that effort worthwhile.

We are grateful to have been entrusted with Phase 1 of the restoration works at this important community landmark, and we look forward to seeing the building continue to serve its community for many years to come.
